In-app guidance

In-app guidance is help delivered inside a product at the moment a user needs it, rather than in a separate help center. The strongest form shows rather than tells (a cursor navigates the real interface to the thing the user asked about), so the user learns where it lives instead of reading a description of where it used to be.

How is it different from a product tour?

A tour is authored once and plays the same steps for everyone until someone maintains it. In-app guidance is generated live from the current interface in response to a real question, so it never walks a user to a button that moved. The difference is maintenance: one decays on every deploy, the other re-verifies on every session.

Does in-app guidance replace docs?

It replaces the part of docs that describes where things are and how to do them, which is the part that goes stale fastest. Conceptual documentation still has a place. In-app guidance handles the navigational how-do-I questions that make up a large share of support volume and don't survive a redesign.
